"Charities": How We Were Duped Into Funding Terrorism

For decades, Americans believed that terrorism was a distant threat, something contained to unstable regions far from our borders. But recent federal actions and a growing pattern of attacks show a different reality: extremist networks are global, sophisticated, and increasingly embedded in Western nations. And one of the most effective tools they use is the one we least expect, "charities".

Americans have trusted the charitable sector as a place of compassion, relief, and humanitarian aid. But recent federal actions reveal a darker reality. Some organizations posing as charities are, in fact, covert financial pipelines for extremist groups.

On March 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against four international nonprofits identified as fronts for Hamas’s military wing, the Izz al‑Din al‑Qassam Brigades

Treasury investigators found that these groups posed as humanitarian organizations while covertly funneling money, supplies, and operational support to Hamas’s military infrastructure. Internal documents seized from Hamas confirmed the coordination.

These nonprofits exploited donor sympathy to redirect aid intended for civilians into militant operations.

For years, Western nations assumed that extremist ideologies would remain isolated to the Middle East. That assumption has collapsed. Europe has endured repeated attacks over the last decade. And now, the United States is seeing a rise in ideologically motivated violence, as we have witnessed with the Synagogue and Old Dominion University attacks just yesterday.

These are not isolated events. They are part of a global ideological movement that rejects Western value and basic human rights.

Western nations, especially the U.S. and Britain have long prided themselves on compassion, openness, and humanitarian generosity. Those values are strengths. But they can also be exploited when you have Immigration systems that fail to screen for extremist ties, nonprofits that operate with minimal oversight and charities that receive donations with no transparency requirements.

There are those on the left that will immediately call me racist and intolerant for stating the truth and that's OK because it must be said. This is not about religion or ethnicity. It is about ideology.

As Americans we believe in:

  • Free speech

  • Gender equality

  • Religious freedom

  • Democratic governance

  • The rule of law

Sharia‑based political systems are fundamentally incompatible with Western constitutional values. Most Muslims worldwide do not support extremist interpretations, but extremist groups absolutely do and they are well‑funded, organized, and strategic. And they are here, in our country, right now.

Carol Pefley for California State Assembly District 28

I’m running for State Assembly to help restore balance and bring common sense back to California’s government. I believe in a future where families can thrive, small businesses can succeed, and opportunity is within reach for all. This is still a great state—and with the right leadership, we can make it more affordable, more accountable, and more hopeful for generations to come.
