Democrats in Denial: The Refusal to Take an Honest Look at Failed Policies

Last night’s California gubernatorial debate made one thing painfully clear: our state’s leaders are still trapped in a cycle of denial. California has the highest cost of housing, gas & taxes. Our schools rank near the bottom, our cities are struggling under the weight of homelessness, addiction, and public disorder, and families are being priced out of the very communities they built. Yet somehow, in debate after debate, we keep hearing the same refrain: “It's Donald Trump's Fault.”

Kaitlyn Collins asked the question millions of Californians have been asking for years: How can Democrats deny responsibility when they’ve controlled the state for decades?

Housing, gas, regulation, taxes, these didn’t appear overnight. They’re the result of long-term policy choices made by the same party that now insists none of this is their fault.

When pressed, candidate Becerra responded with a familiar script, blaming Trump's tariffs and the Iran war for high grocery and gas prices. But Californians know better. We’ve had the highest gas prices in the nation for years, long before any recent conflict. Why? Because of California’s own taxes, fees, and regulations, the extra charges per gallon that Sacramento keeps piling on while our roads crumble beneath us.

And affordability? California was unaffordable long before Trump ever entered politics.

And the reality of the death spiral happening in our major cities is impossible to ignore. Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland, once symbols of opportunity, are now struggling with open-air drug markets, human waste on sidewalks, and tent cities stretching for blocks. These are not new problems. They are the result of decades of one‑party rule, policies that sounded compassionate on paper but failed in practice, and leaders who refuse to acknowledge the consequences.

The debate showed us something important:

California’s political establishment is more committed to protecting its narrative than solving its problems.

I hope the public doesn’t buy the “blame Trump” routine. We deserve leaders willing to take an honest look at the policies that brought us here, policies that were in place long before Donald Trump ever stepped onto the national stage.

Because until we face the truth, nothing will change. And California can’t afford another decade of denial. if you want change, end one party rule and let's elect some common sense leaders who can turn this ship around before it sinks!

Carol Pefley for California State Assembly District 28

I’m running for State Assembly to help restore balance and bring common sense back to California’s government. I believe in a future where families can thrive, small businesses can succeed, and opportunity is within reach for all. This is still a great state—and with the right leadership, we can make it more affordable, more accountable, and more hopeful for generations to come.
