Freedom of Speech Day Resolution
Today I will be presenting the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors with a resolution I would like them to adopt, declaring October 14th as “Freedom of Speech Day” in Honor of Charlie Kirk. I am asking them to publicly condemn violence and use this day to educate children about the importance of freedom of speech. The meeting is at 9:30am if anyone wants to join to show support of this resolution. Let's see how our BOS responds:
WHEREAS, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees the fundamental right to freedom of speech, a cornerstone of American democracy and a defining principle of our national identity; and
WHEREAS, open dialogue, civil discourse, and the free exchange of ideas are essential to a healthy democracy, enabling individuals to express diverse viewpoints, challenge assumptions, and seek common ground; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk, born on October 14th, dedicated his life to championing the principles of free speech and civic engagement, and tragically lost his life in pursuit of these ideals; and
WHEREAS, Charlie Kirk’s commitment to amplifying voices, fostering debate, and encouraging participation in the democratic process serves as a powerful reminder of the value and fragility of our freedoms; and
WHEREAS, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors recognizes the importance of honoring those who have made sacrifices in defense of liberty and acknowledges the debt of gratitude owed to individuals like Charlie Kirk who strive to ensure that all people are given a fair chance to be heard; and
WHEREAS, the Board condemns all forms of violence, especially those committed in response to differences of opinion, and affirms its commitment to protecting peaceful expression and promoting tolerance across all communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors hereby declares October 14th as Freedom of Speech Day in Santa Clara County, in honor of Charlie Kirk and in recognition of the enduring importance of the First Amendment;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board encourages residents, schools, and civic institutions to observe this day by engaging in respectful dialogue, learning about the history and significance of free speech, and recommitting to the principles of open expression and mutual understanding.
