Tonight at the Liberty Forum

Carol Pefley with Enes Kanter Freedom at the Liberty Forum

Tonight at the Liberty Forum, I had the honor of meeting Enes Kanter Freedom, a man who is not only tall in stature, but a true giant in courage.

Enes sacrificed his NBA career to speak out against tyranny, slave labor, and genocide especially the abuses committed by the Chinese Communist Party. While others stayed silent, he wore “Free Tibet” shoes on the court, called out forced labor camps, and demanded justice for Uyghurs and other oppressed peoples. The NBA, deeply entangled with China, didn’t take kindly to his truth-telling. He paid the price but never backed down. His story is incredible. From escaping arrest warrants and death threats to becoming an American citizen and global human rights advocate, Enes embodies the spirit of liberty. And despite all he’s endured, he remains humble, kind, and deeply committed to bringing people together.

He loves this country and believes in its promise. Meeting him tonight and hearing his incredible story reminded me why we fight for freedom, for dignity, and for the courage to speak when it’s inconvenient. Enes Kanter Freedom is living proof that one voice can shake the system.

That’s exactly the kind of courage and conviction I’m bringing to this campaign. We need leaders who will stand up to entrenched power, speak plainly about injustice, and restore accountability in California politics. I’m running to make sure families have a reason to stay, thrive, and believe again. Let’s build a future rooted in truth, fairness, and hope.

Carol Pefley for California State Assembly District 28

I’m running for State Assembly to help restore balance and bring common sense back to California’s government. I believe in a future where families can thrive, small businesses can succeed, and opportunity is within reach for all. This is still a great state—and with the right leadership, we can make it more affordable, more accountable, and more hopeful for generations to come.
